When to Use Used Hyundai Excavator?
What kind of well used excavator to buy / stay away from - AgTalk
NNW NebraskaI am thinking of trying to find a used and older excavator. Price is a big concern, but need one that will still have some service.
Not wanting a big one, probably around to # machine.
I have some pipe line to put in, around ft and probably more pipe line to do in the future.
do not own a semi, so would like something I could move around the farm without buying a semi. also may do some work cleaning out some ditch trough some low ground and weight is not good for that.
Have some other small projects I would occasionally do, as well as using it around twice a week or so cleaning out a settling pond where I pump irrigation water out of a river. I currently clean the end of pond with a very old drag line, but it is getting a little tired.
For the pipe line project, I could possibly be better off renting one but for the occasional projects, the trucking to get one hauled in and out would be prohibitive.
Thinking the pipe line projects (s ) would make a good payment towards owning my own machine.
Also, how many hours do those kind of machines typically run before starting to have major problems with the engine, hydraulics or what ever? If I was to look at one, what would I want to be watching for, I have never operated one.
Also there may be a Kato hd450 somewhat locally. seems to not be real common. would that be something to consider or not?
East Prairie, MOStay away from a "Grey" machine, which is a foreign brand with a foreign engine, many times something you can't pronounce. However, many offered a cummins engine as an option and those are great machines that are easy to get parts for. I have a Hyundai with a Cummins and it's been a great machine.
West Central IndianaDidn't have much luck with a Deere 690ELC. Should say couldn't find a decent dealership to keep it running.
South Western Ontario, CanadaTake a good HARD look at Case. Simple, reliable and service should not be a problem as more rural case dealerships can get parts.
Pendleton OregonBe sure to get a high pressure machine with pilot controlled valves, good machines are the JD E series and later, Komatsu, Link-belt/Case/Sumitomo , Hitachi are good machines. By the way 690E's are great machinesWe bought a case B a few years back. It had almost hours on it when we bought it. Has a Cummins 5.9L and has been a good machine. We've had issues with some of the hydraulic lines were getting old and blew out which was a huge pain but that was about it. On any higher hour machine you might get, I would definately recommend looking over the hydraulics real well and try and replace hoses before they go out on you.
SC IowaI have a Case B for sale. Bought it 3 years ago for the farm. Engine blew up while cleaning a pond so bought a Case CX210. Had time this summer to rebuild the engine. Has 42" bucket and thumb. $20,000 cheap enough?
West TennesseeGood advice so far. We bought a 120c last year and have been really happy with it. Be sure that you are aware pins and bushings for the stick and bucket are EXPENSIVE on any of them. Slop in those is expensive to fix. The undercarriage on trackhoes usually lasts a long time because they aren't tracking all the time they're running like a dozer is. Still you need to understand undercarriage wear. If you don't then take someone with you who does. Another expensive area to work on. I would not personally want one that had play in the swing bearing. That is REALLY expensive to fix. To check this have someone look at the swing bearing area while someone picks the machine up with the boom. If there is movement there then that's not good. Our 120c has about 4,500 hours on it and there is zero play in the swing bearing.
South Western Ontario, CanadaOurs is a Case B. Around 10,000 hours on it and still going strong. We will be completely lost if she grenades. We bought it with 7,250 hrs.
Best advice..... ALWAYS go bigger than what you THINK you need!!!!!
It will become one of your "go to" machines more often than you think. Three years ago we wondered if we actually needed one. Ever since than, we wonder how we operated without it. Its our forklift, telehandler, tile machine, land clearing and anything else we can dream up machine wrapped up in one nice package.

Central, IAHow much reach do you need for the pond? With everything else you said, specifically not wanting a semi, i would be looking for a big backhoe with extend a hoe.Nebraska Sandhiller
