What is a good tractor for mowing on hills?
I have a 2 acre hilly lot, some of it characterized by steep slopes. For several years, I carefully used a Kubota, sometimes with liquid in the tires and chains for added traction. Initially, when mowing this yard, I noticed that going straight down a steep hill often led to free-wheeling, with braking proving ineffective. Recently, the tractor started free-wheeling backwards while climbing steep inclines, which was extremely frightening. Given it is 14 years old now, I sold it and began searching for a new mower. I test drove a John Deere X520 but was left highly disappointed. When attempting to back up a small hill, the tractor simply stopped without spinning or stalling, and the differential lock was unresponsive. I had the same issue going up a small hill forward. I am seeking recommendations for a reliable tractor. I've begun to consider Cub Cadet among other options.

Tractor Choice for Slopes
Any reasonably modern 70+hp 4WD tractor should manage steep slopes well, provided it has sufficient front ballast to keep the front end stable while enhancing rear traction. Appropriate tire inflation and good lug quality are crucial, along with ensuring that ground conditions are favorable, as they can change quickly. Be cautious of dew, lush grass, and wet patches, as well as rough terrain, stones, and rabbit holes, all of which can pose high risks.
Moreover, regular maintenance of your tractor is essential. Use an appropriate gear ratio to avoid overspeed or stalling, and ensure that oil levels in both the engine and transmission are topped up to their maximum marks. Loss of steering, PTO functionality, or engine seizure on a slope must be avoided. When traversing or turning on slopes, be mindful of your tractor's center of gravity. If needed, widen the tractor's track width as much as practical for various tasks while remaining vigilant for any undulations, holes, or bumps that could tip the tractor over.
