Weir Minerals' Warman Continues to Thrive After 80 Years
Weir Minerals proudly commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warman slurry pump, a trailblazer in high and hard-wearing slurry pumps that remains a leading choice in the industry. The celebration took place at the end of May in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, where attendees reflected on the pump's rich history and discussed upcoming innovations.

Ricardo Garib, Weir Minerals' divisional president, emphasized the significance of the Warman brand, stating, "Warman has profoundly influenced the mining sector over the past eight decades, and it represents a source of pride for us."
Initially designed to tackle high-wear challenges encountered in slurry pumping, the Warman pump has fostered a thriving industrial sector and stands as a cornerstone of Weir Minerals, supported by a workforce of over 8,000 and more than 150 manufacturing and service centers worldwide.
Invented in Kalgoorlie by Charles Warman, the original slurry pump featured replaceable liners and impellers. The Warman Series A quickly gained acceptance and secured its position as a global leader in the field, leading to continued improvements on the Warman AH pump.
Substantial advancements have been made with interchangeable metal and rubber wearing components, culminating in the introduction of the Warman GSL pump designed for handling high flow rates and corrosive slurries.
Growing Demand
"The Warman pump's reputation for reliability has been a significant factor in its growth; consumers trust it due to its long-standing presence in the market," noted Marcus Lane, global product manager for centrifugal pumps at Weir Minerals.
Innovative Product Development
The Weir Group's acquisition of the Warman pump led to various technological advancements. One notable achievement was in 2015, with the creation of a groundbreaking impeller and inlet design to facilitate effective pumping of mineral froths and high-density viscous slurries. The following year, the Warman WBH pump was launched, featuring an adjustable throat bush to optimize wear distribution.
The success of the Warman lineup is built on its innovative design, which has established a new standard in the slurry pump market.

At Weir Minerals, we consistently seek ways to enhance the Warman pump for our clients. “Research and development serve as the backbone of all our product innovations and are critical for our ongoing success,” Lane added.
“We possess an exceptional understanding of the diverse environments in which our pumps are utilized, as well as the wear mechanisms involved. This expertise enables us to customize materials and designs for specific applications, giving us a competitive advantage.”
Today, the Warman pump enjoys an unmatched reputation in the slurry pumping arena, commanding a significant share of the global mining sector.
As technology evolves rapidly and societal needs shift towards new materials, the Warman pump is primed to adapt. Weir Minerals has developed its proprietary Internet of Things platform, Synertrex, compatible with Warman pumps to monitor their performance continuously.
“We have accumulated extensive knowledge over the past 80 years regarding pump operation and efficient slurry transportation. Synertrex will leverage this knowledge to enhance our products,” explained Michael Hambe, data scientist at Weir Minerals.
The Synertrex platform facilitates data collection and analysis to predict pump performance and improve operational efficiency. This empowers customers to run their pumps at optimal performance levels.
Weir Minerals' commitment to superior material technology, innovative designs, and outstanding customer service sets them apart from competitors.
“In terms of Australian mining exports, the Warman pump stands out as one of the greatest success stories. We are committed to continuous innovation to enhance the Warman pump even further,” Garib stated.
In the wake of the anniversary celebration in Kalgoorlie, Weir Minerals is embarking on a six-month commemorative journey that highlights the legacy of Warman, celebrates its experts, unveils key pump innovations, and shares stories about enduring Warman pumps utilized in various locations worldwide.
