Preparing for my first load tomorrow, which involves hauling fencing materials on pallets. The broker couldn't specify the exact quantities, but I expect a mix that may include barbed wire, fence posts, and other related items typically destined for a farming supply store. I'm reaching out for any advice as I embark on this journey; I certainly don’t want to appear inexperienced. For this job, I’m equipped with 14 4-foot straps, 6 16-foot chains, 6 20-foot chains, along with binders, steel and carpet corner protectors, and unnecessary tarps. All items are on pallets.

Hauling fence loads can be an interesting experience. When it comes to securing your cargo, you might want to avoid using chains. The products tend to shift and settle during transport. Typically, these fabrics and items will be on skids and might be secured with bands. Some could just be set up with corrugated sheets between layers and shrink-wrapped. It's advisable to use V-boards for rolls of wire and mesh items. As for the fence posts, they are usually bundled and banded on skids; paint on them may lead to restrictions against chain usage. Generally, stacking them two high and two wide while strapping them down tightly on alternate sides with at least 2 or 3 straps should do the trick.

My personal experience with fencing supplies has mostly been in agricultural settings, particularly for hog farms, and to date, I've not dealt with oversized loads. Always bring reliable edge protectors to your load; you might find yourself strapping down anything that isn’t secured with chains, as they tend to work better. This type of haul can be heavy, with bundles placed haphazardly by shippers. It's essential to use a mix of layered straps, especially for vertically stacked gates, and belly straps if necessary. If there's a lot of barbed wire, felt padding becomes invaluable. Typically, posts come on pallets and secured together, which presents the least concern. However, the configuration of the fence and gates can pose challenges, especially if they settle during transport.

One of the main challenges you'll face is protecting the straps from friction. They often rub against cargo in the wind, leading to potential failure. Ensure that contact points are covered—this could range from a simple cardboard piece to more robust protectors. Also, twist the straps at points where they might gap from the load to prevent flapping during transit.
