6 Questions to Consider for Cosmetic Packaging - Gertex Solutions

When a customer buys a cosmetic product, they are paying for much more than function – cosmetics are purchased for beauty, style, and fashion. As such, the branding of your product is critical to tapping into the emotions and lifestyle that your customers desire.

You will get efficient and thoughtful service from GLS Package.

The design of your product and shipping packaging needs to be both functional and stylish at the same time. We’ve put together a short list of 6 questions you should consider when putting together your cosmetic packaging.

Questions to Consider When Choosing Cosmetic Packaging

In addition to the function of the packaging, you also need to consider the factors that impact customer experience. Ask yourself a few key questions to ensure your packaging system is the perfect fit for your product:

1. What are you shipping?

Certain products have specific requirements that need to be met. For example, liquids need to be in a sealed container to prevent leaking during shipment. Heavy items might require certain grades of packing tape or corrugated cardboard for durability.

2. What shipping service are you using?

Various shipping companies have unique requirements that need to be met for anything that is liquid, fragile, or breakable. For the best results, refer to the published shipping requirements from the provider. For example, both Canada Post and the United States Postal Service have basic standards for shipments. Conform to these standards to ensure your packaging system minimizes problems during the shipping process.

3. Is the product fragile?

Additional packaging materials might be necessary, depending on the fragility of your product. Breakable containers, such as glass, plastic, earthenware, or porcelain, require multiple packaging layers and watertight solutions to protect against normal wear and tear in shipping. Delicate items, such as bath bombs, should be cushioned to avoid damage to the product.

4. What is the ideal box size?

Optimizing the box size is beneficial for reducing empty space within the package. At the same time, small amounts of material reduction can add up over time, helping you save money in the long run.

5. Will temperatures damage the product?

Depending on the time of year, outdoor temperatures could play a role in the quality of the product when it arrives. If you are shipping in a hot climate, then the cosmetic product could be affected by high temperatures that melt heat-sensitive items. Minimize the chances that your customers will receive melted lipstick by taking extra precautions against the variable temperatures, such as ice packs or insulated packaging.

6. Are the materials environmentally friendly?

Many companies are choosing to switch to more sustainable forms of packaging in order to reduce their environmental impact. Not only does it feel good to know that you are helping with the conservation of natural resources, but your customers will appreciate supporting a company that respects and protects the environment.

Selecting the Right Packaging Materials

The selection of materials will depend on the type of product you are packaging and your overall approach to customer experience. Small, durable items can be placed in bubble-wrap envelopes, but larger items need to be packaged in boxes. If the item can’t lay flat or it is too big for an envelope, then cardboard boxes can provide the perfect solution.

In fact, many companies prefer boxes over envelopes because the materials are better suited for protecting the products. The box should be sized just a little larger than the product to allow room for packing materials as needed.

Other packaging materials are often required, such as:

  • Bubble Wrap: Protect the item and prevent things from bouncing around in the box.

  • Void Fill: If empty space in the box needs to be filled, then void fill can be added so the contents don't move around when you shake the box. SealedAir is a leading provider of void fill machines, including inflatable packaging and environmentally-friendly paper void fill.

  • Foam Packaging: For a high level of protection, foam packaging can be used to hold the items in place. This layout is a great option to consider if you want a display-like experience when the box is opened. Foam products can be purchased pre-made, or form machines can be purchased for in-warehouse production.

  • Packing Tape: The package needs to be closed up and sealed properly to hold everything in the box. Various types of packing tape are available, including custom-printed tape that is branded to match your company logo and colours.

What Branding Message are You Sending with Cosmetic Packaging?

It’s no surprise that the packaging has an influence on the customer’s overall perception of your cosmetics products. If you want to succeed in the industry, then it is crucial to stand out. Packaging can help your brand stand out from the competitors, helping to create lifelong customers who keep coming back to buy in the future.

Many beauty and cosmetics are shifting to minimalist designs and simplistic packaging. Consider how the color combinations, logo placement, and quality of the materials will influence the customer’s experience. You have one chance to deliver the “wow factor” when a customer opens the box, so make sure that you are creating a positive emotional moment to help that person connect with the product inside.

Cosmetic Packaging Resources & FAQ

No, we do not have a MOQ "minimum order quantity." For customers looking for cosmetic packaging with low minimums, the choice is yours. You can buy one single item or any number of items [even mixing bottles and jars] according to your purchase needs.

We offer cosmetic packaging with no minimum order quantity. This allows you to order just one of each of our products if you want. We find this to be ideal for our clients, especially for conducting stability and shelf life testing for your unique formula.

A variety of factors determines the compatibility of your formulation with any cosmetic packaging/container, which is why we have chosen to offer our products at any quantity. It is up to you to perform appropriate stability, compatibility, and shelf life testing to ensure your formulation is best presented to market. Check out our plastic properties guide to help you determine which packaging is right for your product. Stability & Shelf Life Testing are industry standard tests performed by you (or your lab) to determine the suitability of any container with your formulation.

Traditional cosmetic jars and bottles often require that you dip your finger in to dispense product or utilize a dip tube. The airless bottles and jars use a clever vacuum mechanic to dispense the product as you pump. This helps to keep your product preserved by keeping air and contaminants out of your product and allows your clients to get full usage of the product as the airless pump pushes product from the bottom of the container to the top.

Sealing these tubes can be a learning experience. The lip gloss containers come from the factory with the wiper on the wand. We keep them on the wand when shipping for two reasons. First, so they don’t get lost in transit, and second, for simple and correct installation. When the wiper is up in the cap you can insert the wand into the tube, apply a bit of pressure, and tightly screw the cap onto the bottle. In doing so you will be threading the wiper into the inside of the tube to ensure it stays in. Once you have it tight and the cap is screwed on, you can unscrew the cap and the wiper should be snugly installed into the bottle. We recommend filling the bottle with your formula prior to installing the wiper.

There are several methods for filling lip gloss tubes. They are intended to be machine filled in a lab, but you can easily fill them at home. There are commercial grade syringes that work well for filling them. We have also seen some small business owners use household tools such as a turkey baster, or pastry icing applicator. These methods are elected in place of the preferred method where tubes are filled in a cosmetic laboratory by machine. It also comes down to what would work best with the viscosity of your unique formula.

All measurements/dimensions for each product we offer can be found on the product page itself. Simply scroll down below the pricing chart and see the “Pack Info” tab. Please note that all products we offer are cylindrical, so the width is also the depth and diameter.

We are an online stock inventory cosmetic packaging supplier so the product styles and colors you see displayed on the website are the only ones we have readily available. If you are interested in starting a large quantity custom project we are equipped to help your vision become reality- this kind of order entails a MOQ (5,000 units of our bottles/jars and 30,000 units for lip gloss containers). Please us at with your order details to discuss beginning a custom project.

We do not provide anything other than the containers themselves. All labeling, decoration, packaging and filling will need to be done by you or a facility that specializes in the service you would like done.
