Molded Fiberglass Grating - FRP Grating

Molded FRP Resin System Options

  • Phenolic (Type P): This is the ideal choice for applications that require maximum fire resistance and low smoke emissions, such as oil refineries, ships, and train decks.
  • Vinyl Ester (Type V): This resin is designed to endure harsh chemical environments found in chemical processing, waste treatment, and metal plating facilities.
  • Isophthalic Polyester (Type 1): This type is well-suited for environments where chemical splashes and spills are frequent.
  • Food Grade Isophthalic Polyester (Type F): This grade is specifically designed for the food and beverage industry, which often faces exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • General Purpose Ortho Polyester (Type O): This cost-effective alternative to vinyl ester and isophthalic polyester products provides good performance.

Molded Fiberglass FRP Top Options

Meniscus Top: Featuring a concave surface, or half-moon cross-section, this type has no grit. The molded meniscus grating offers superior slip resistance in various environments, including wet or oily conditions, and is the standard surface for all of Marco Specialty Steel's molded gratings.

Integrally Applied Grit Top: An optional grip top molded FRP grating features a quartz grit that is integrally applied, cured, and sealed onto the surface for exceptional slip resistance.

At Marco Specialty Steel, we provide a broad array of FRP products and systems designed for maximum flexibility. Our reinforced grating encompasses two principal product lines: molded grating and pultruded grating. Each manufacturing method has unique advantages, resulting in distinct performance and durability characteristics. If you are uncertain about choosing between molded and pultruded grating, our skilled team can assist you by clarifying the benefits of each.

We produce molded FRP grating in various practical standard sizes, including 12", 24", 36", and 48" widths, available in different lengths that can be utilized as-is or cut to meet your specifications.

Molded Fiberglass Characteristics

  • Strength: The interwoven square mesh construction provides bi-directional strength, enhancing loading versatility compared to rectangular mesh. The uniform arrangement of continuous glass strands during fabrication ensures enhanced strength.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Molded grating is the preferred choice for highly corrosive environments. The one-piece fabrication and comprehensive resin coverage contribute to the inherent chemical resistance of the materials used. Additionally, it offers excellent moisture, humidity, and bacterial growth resistance, making it suitable for food and medical facilities.
  • Fabrication Features: Molded square mesh allows for circular cuts or field modifications, often eliminating the need for extra support for cut edges. Its adaptability to elevated floor systems using special leg pedestals compensates for uneven sub-floors or slopes.
  • Cost-Effective: When evaluating grating material options, molded FRP is an excellent long-term choice. Its interwoven square mesh design results in less waste during installation. Moreover, it is durable and requires minimal maintenance.
  • Safety Surface: Molded grating offers an outstanding skid-resistant concave surface. A molded-in grit surface option is available to ensure safe footing for workers, while its non-porous properties help prevent bacterial growth in food applications.

Molded Grating Fasteners and Accessories

Marco Specialty Steel supplies various clips for its gratings. We provide specially designed attachments and clips that secure panels together and anchor them to support structures. All clips are constructed from type 316 stainless steel and come in sizes of 1", 1-1/2", and 2". Contact us today to find the ideal clip for your molded grating project.

Molded Grating Stair Treads

Marco offers numerous slip and corrosion-resistant products to ensure stairway safety. Our comprehensive stair tread range includes panels in a one-piece molded design for new or replacement steps, covered treads to replace deteriorating concrete steps, or tread covers that enhance slip and corrosion resistance for existing metal, concrete, or wood steps. Molded FRP Fabrication Procedures

Marco Specialty Steel is not just a supplier of molded FRP grating; we also fabricate our products to guarantee that you receive the best possible solution tailored to your specific application. Our commitment to quality control ensures the highest standards for our products. If you prefer to fabricate your molded grating, refer to the following procedures:

  • Safety Precautions: When cutting molded grating, always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and a dust mask to minimize inhalation of dust. Additionally, wear gloves and a shop coat with neck and sleeves secured to prevent skin irritation. Ensure you work in a well-lit and ventilated area.
  • Cutting Molded Grating: Depending on the quantity of grating to be cut, various shop tools can be utilized. For optimal results, use a heavy-duty rotary saw with a masonry, carbide, or diamond-coated blade. Ensure firm support of the panels to prevent shifting. Positioning the panel bottom-side-up provides a smooth surface for the saw, reducing chipping. Remember to account for the blade kerf (3/16”) when measuring.
  • Grinding: All cut edges should be ground smooth using a coarse grit, open-coated (resin) grinding disk.

  • Finishing: All cut surfaces should be coated with resin to prevent corrosion of glass fibers. A light application of a two-part resin system or urethane spray paint is satisfactory.
  • Installation: Provide a minimum of 1-1/2” support around all panel edges. Use type 'M' stainless steel (type 316) clips every 48” (maximum) for full 4' x 12' panels, with a minimum of four clips for any piece.

Molded FRP Applications

Molded grating can be utilized in a variety of applications across multiple industries. It is especially suitable for foot traffic and occasionally small vehicles.

  • Flooring
  • Ramps
  • Piers and boat platforms
  • Chemical storage
  • Crossover platforms and elevated walkways
  • Tunnels and bridges
  • Sump and trench covers
  • Stair treads

Molded FRP: How it is Made

Molded fiberglass grating is produced through a one-piece construction process. This involves interlacing pre-wetted glass reinforcing strands in a liquid resin matrix within a specified configuration. Once the resin matrix cures, the molded grid is detached from the mold. The one-piece design guarantees complete impregnation of the glass with resin.
