5 Surprising Benefits Of Pico Laser You May Not Know

If you’re looking for laser treatments in Singapore for your skin, you’ve probably come across the Pico Laser. It has multiple features and is often marketed as THE all-in-one laser for your skin concerns.

But how true is this? Is the pico laser just a generic anti-ageing treatment, can it address specific concerns, and is it really suitable for everyone?

To help you understand the Pico Laser better, we’ve gathered 5 benefits to consider before you decide to go for this treatment. As with any aesthetic procedure, of course, it is important to consult your doctor to know just how suitable the pico laser is for you.

What Is Pico Laser Treatment?

Pico laser treatment is a non-invasive and non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses laser energy to target common skin concerns. It works by delivering ultra-short bursts of energy to your skin, which breaks down pigmentation, acne scars. It also improves the appearance of wrinkles and other skin imperfections.

Pico laser treatment can also be used to break down tattoo pigments. Pico laser tattoo removal has been found to be generally safe.

Does The Pico Laser Really Work?

Pico laser has been proven effective. According to a study, 70% of patients who received nine laser sessions reported at least a moderate improvement at six weeks of post-treatment.

Additionally, none of them encountered any major side effects. Erythema and edema were sometimes reported, but these resolved spontaneously. Pico laser is, hence, also a safe treatment.

What Makes Pico Laser Treatment Different From Other Lasers?

Pico laser treatment is different from other laser treatments because it uses picosecond pulses of energy, which are much shorter than the nanosecond pulses used in traditional laser treatments.

This shorter pulse duration allows for more precision in targeting skin concerns while minimising damage to your surrounding tissue. Additionally, Pico laser treatment may have a lower risk of side effects and downtime compared to nanosecond laser treatments.

While Pico Lasers tend to be favoured over nano lasers, some doctors might find that nano lasers are still effective for specific skin areas and issues. They may also combine the two lasers for treatment.

5 Benefits of Pico laser treatment

1. Improved Skin Texture

The Pico laser works by breaking down underlying skin tissue and stimulating cell renewal. This process gives your skin a smoother surface with improvements in the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes.

Pico laser treatment also promotes collagen and elastin production, promoting skin repair in the process.

2. Reduced Pigmentation

Pico laser treatment can disintegrate excess melanin in your skin, helping to reduce the appearance of pigmentation caused by sun damage, age spots, and melasma.

For pigmentation, Pico laser works by directly applying laser energy into the skin. This causes the pigments to scatter into smaller fragments. The body’s immune response will then naturally remove the broken pigments.

3. Scar Reduction

Pico laser treatment is useful for reducing the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks. The laser pulses:

  • Penetrate the skin deeply to reach the scarred layer
  • Cause thermal damage to the scarred skin layers, which shed to reveal new, regenerated skin.

The result is smoother, more even-toned skin. Depending on the depth and severity of your scarring, you may need a few sessions of the Pico laser treatment to completely remove your scars.

4. Safe and Non-invasive

Pico laser treatment is a safe and non-invasive procedure. Compared to traditional lasers, any damage caused to the skin by Pico laser treatment is minimal and does not affect the surrounding areas of skin. Hence, complications like scarring and burning are less likely to occur.

5. Quick Treatment Time

Pico laser treatment sessions typically take about 15 to 30 minutes, making it a quick and easy treatment option that can be done during a lunch break or after work.

Unlike traditional laser treatments, Pico laser is administered in one trillionth of a second (picosecond), which is a hundred times faster. Hence, results are generally quicker.

Picosecond laser - DermNet

What is a picosecond laser?

A picosecond laser is a laser device that uses very short pulse durations to target endogenous pigmentation and exogenous ink particles (tattoos). The medium varies accordingly to the wavelength being used, whether the neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) crystal (532 nm or nm), or the Alexandrite crystal (755 nm).

What are the indications for a picosecond laser?

The main indication for the use of a picosecond laser is tattoo removal [1]. Depending on their wavelength, picosecond lasers are particularly useful for clearing blue and green pigments, which are difficult to eliminate using other lasers, and tattoos that are refractory to treatment with the traditional Q-switched lasers.

The use of picosecond lasers has also been reported for treatment of melasma, naevus of Ota, naevus of Ito, minocycline-induced pigmentation, and solar lentigines [2].

Some picosecond lasers have fractionated hand pieces that facilitate tissue remodelling and are used to treat acne scarring, photoageing, and rhytides (wrinkles) [2].

What are the contraindications to picosecond lasers?

As with other laser devices, picosecond lasers are relatively contraindicated in patients with darker skin tones (ie, Fitzpatrick skin types 4–6), who are more susceptible to side effects from laser treatment.

Picosecond lasers use pulse durations of less than 1 nanosecond, which causes predominantly photoacoustic damage (pulses of light that can be measured by changes in pressure ie, sound waves) rather than photothermal destruction of pigment or ink particles (measured by production of heat). This results in effective clearance of abnormal pigment, while minimising photothermal damage to the surrounding tissue.

Why choose a picosecond laser?

A picosecond laser selectively destroys the target pigment without damaging healthy, normal tissue. This allows rapid clearing of the abnormal pigmentation with minimal collateral damage to surrounding tissue.

Picosecond lasers used for tattoo removal require fewer treatments, cause fewer side effects, and result in reduced post-procedural downtime compared to nanosecond Q-switched lasers. They can clear some tattoos that are refractory to other forms of laser therapy, and there is a reduced risk of causing scarring and hypopigmentation.

The additional cost and reduced availability of picosecond lasers compared to Q-switched lasers currently restricts their widespread use.
